The Home was setup in 2011 by Richard Gahan and Austin Heginbottom to preserve those “once loved but not forgotten” balloons from disposal / scrapping for the future benefit of pilots / spotters / photographers and anyone with a general interest in ballooning.
The first balloon to be acquired by the Home was the earliest remaining UK based Lindstrand 90A – BVAG. This was seen available on the BBAC forum based in Devon, it was acquired as Richard who already owned Lindstrand 90A – TSWI.
The second balloon was rescued from being skipped in Oxford. With the help of Sandy Mitchell and Martin Mitchell (Hertfordshire Balloon Collection), a quick drive from Breadstone during the Exclusive Cup weekend, the balloon was saved – ex Guiness ENUS.
The Home continues to work closely with both the Mobberley Balloon Collection and Hertfordshire Balloon Collection to ensure balloons offered to be saved are secured for the future enjoyment.
Since those initial acqusitions, more balloons have been donated to the Home either as permanent fixtures or stored on behalf of their owners.
The balloons are used at inflation days around the UK including the bi-annual BBML Inflation Day, Midlands Air Festival plus other small events. Check out our Gallery page for photos from previous events.
